On Saturday, the World Series of Fighting put on their biggest show to date, when they put 4 title fights on the line, in the historic Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.
In the main event, lightweight champion, undefeated Justin Gaethje put his belt on the line against Pride FC veteran, Luiz “Buscape” Firmino, who took the fight on short notice.. The fight started with a blazing fast start with both fighters running at each other. After a brief grappling exchange, they met in the center of the cage and each guy threw bombs at each other. The challenger was able to land a takedown, and during a scramble, was able to take Gaethje’s back as he stood up. Gaethje scrambled free and landed a cartwheel kick to end the round.
The second round began with an insane pace. Firmino proved to be game by landing several big shots on the feet, including a flying knee and several huge uppercuts. Gaethje looked exhausted and fired shots back, but Buscape continued to get the best of the exchanges.
In the third round, the two fighters continued to attack, with the challenger not backing down. Both guys landed huge shots in an absolute war. Gaethje was able to dig deep and land several power shots, while stuffing takedown attempts from Firmino. Crazy good action.
Between the third and fourth round, referee Dan Miragliotta requested the ringside doctor check the swelling over Firmino’s right eye. They referee stated that Firmino’s eye was complete closed and stopped the fight. Gaethje wins the fight by doctor’s stoppage in a fight that was on its way to being a fight of the year candidate. Very unfortunate to not be able to get two more rounds.
Two former UFC welterweight title contenders locked horns as WSOF champion, Jon Fitch faced off against Jake Shields. Both battled back in forth in a grueling wrestling and grappling matchup. Both fighters landed takedowns and attempted submissions in a very close battle. Fitch was able to secure an advantage in the top control, giving him the unanimous decision over Shields.
Fitch stated during his post fight interview that he has some serious injuries, and that he might be forced to retire.
Marlon Moraes defended his bantamweight title for the 5th time, with a TKO due to injury over Josenaldo Silva. Moraes was having his way with Silva, landing huge shots, before Silva jumped for a flying knee and hurting his own knee as he came down to the mat.
The fourth title fight of the card, was between New York’s own, and multiple division champion, David Branch defending his middleweight title against Louis Taylor. Branch pop shot Taylor of the feet and used his wrestling advantage on Taylor before locking in a rear naked choke in the 5th round.
