UFC St. Louis Recap: Darren Elkins Chokes Out Michael Johnson
Longtime UFC veteran, Michael Johnson, drops to featherweight for the first time and takes on the gritty Darren Elkins. The fight was originally scheduled for the preliminary card and was boosted to the main card after the bout between Uriah Hall and Vitor Belfort was scrapped.
Johnson is 1-4 in his last five which took place in the lightweight division. His last bout, where he faced off against UFC newcomer Justin Gaethje was an absolute barn burner and serious fight of the year contender.
Darren Elkins is riding a five-fight win streak and which includes wins over Dennis Bermudez and Godofredo Pepey. His bout with Mirsad Bektic gave us the comeback of 2017. Elkins was down two rounds against Bektic before landing punches and a devastating head kick in the third round.
Johnson comes out kicking. Elkins shoots and is stuffed. Johnson is swinging big punches at Elkins. Elkins lands a body kick and stumbles off balance. Johnson lands a big straight left. Elkins keeps shooting and getting stuffed. Johnson stumbles Elkins with a left. Another straight left land for Johnson. Elkins lands a short right. Elkins is busted up. A body kick lands for Elkins. Johnson is working his leg kicks. Johnson with a nice combo on Elkins, followed by another big left. Johnson looks composed and calculated. Johnson goes to the body and to the head with a nice combo.
The MMA Takeover scores the round 10-9 for Johnson.
Elkins’ face is swollen and his nose is leaking. Johnson goes back to his straight left. Elkins scores a takedown. He’s staying heavy and landing ground and pound from half guard. Elkins is landing short elbows and punches. Johnson scrambles and Elkins takes his back. Johnson is fighting the choke. Elkins’ arm slips under the chin and Johnson taps!
