UFC London Recap: Manuwa KO’s Anderson Fast

On Saturday, the UFC returned to London with the entire card being shown on Fight Pass.

The main event of the contest matched up Englishman Jimi Manuwa vs Corey Anderson. Anderson was pressing the fight trying to take Manuwa down, who stuffed his takedown attempts. Manuwa seemed to be tracking down Anderson and waiting to land his power shot. The shot came as Anderson attempted to circle away from Manuwa towards his left side, and Manuwa was able to land a left hook that put Anderson out cold.

During a post fight interview with Dan Hardy, Manuwa called for a the winner of Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson, who fights at UFC 210. Manuwa also called for a fight with boxer, David Haye.

In the co-main event, Gunner Nelson faced off against Alan Jouban. Nelson had a large support from the English crowd and he didn’t disappoint. He dominated the first round on the ground, easily getting to mount and making Jouban work, However in the second round, Nelson displayed his much improved standup game. He landed a shot that rocked Jouban, and then finished off the fighter with a guillotine choke. Nelson won the contest with ease.

In the last fight in his long career, Brad Pickett returned to his home country of England for one last performance. Pickett took on Marlon Vera, who was taking the fight on short notice. Even though Pickett”s nickname is “one punch”, it was his very underrated wrestling game that was winning the fight for him. Pickett was able to get takedowns in the first and second round. Vera was a very game opponent, and landed a lot of kicks and step knees during the first two rounds, but was probably down heading into the last round. Vera’s Coach, Colin Oyama gave him a very motivating speech between rounds, causing Vera to come out firing. Vera landed a high kick that sent Pickett crashing to the ground. Vera finished a hurt Pickett with punches from on top.

A very humble Vera gave all credit to Pickett during his post fight interview calling Pickett a legend. An emotional Pickett addressed his home town crowd saying “You guys aren’t my fans, you are my friends”.

In the fight of the night, Englishman, Arnold Allen faced off against Finland fighter, Makwani Amirkhani. The fight was a high paced with insane scrambles and submission attempts. Amirkhani got several takedowns on Allen, but Allen continually was able to reverse the position. It seemed that Allen had the better gas tank and it was the difference in the fight. Allen won by split decision.
