The UFC Light Heavyweight division may have taken another huge blow.
Volkan Oezdemir was arrested Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability. No other details of the case were made available, and a full arrest report was not yet searchable in the Broward County Sheriff’s department’s database.
Oezdemir had been a man on a mission climbing the division ranks with two huge surprise KO’s over Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa in his last two fights. He’s 3-0 overall in his UFC career. Many fans and experts alike have been clamoring at the thought of Oezdemir challenging champion Daniel Cormier for the belt, given his performances in the Octagon. Cormier himself even sounded excited and announced the fight could take place in early 2018. Now, that shot may not happen as soon as expected, or at all given the severity of the allegation.
Time will tell, but this certainly doesn’t help a division that was in desperate need of new talent following the potential doping violation and provisional suspension of ex-champion Jon Jones, who faces a 4-year suspension if found guilty.
