The UFC held an event on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland featuring a heavy dose of Europeans fighters, and some solid prospects. The event was headlined by welterweights Gunner Nelson and Santiago Ponzinibbio.
Nelson came in as the favorite and looked to fit the billing in the first minute of the contest. He was bouncing on his feet in his karate stance and landed some nice shots on Ponzinibbio. However, it all changed with one right hand. Ponzinibbio landed a short right cross that shot Nelson across the Octagon. Ponzinibbio pounced on the hurt fighter from Iceland. He landed a stiff left jab that sent Nelson crashing to the canvas. He followed it up with two big shots causing the referee to pull Ponzinibbio off of Nelson. Santiago Ponzinibbio beats Gunner Nelson by 1st round TKO.
Joanne Calderwood didn’t have the homecoming to Glasgow that she wanted. First, she missed weight by 2 pounds and forced to give up 20% of her pay. Second, she lost a close decision to Cynthia Calvillo. The fight was characterized as grappler vs striker and it played out that way. Calderwood came out pushing the pace. She landed several push kicks and leg kicks in the first round, but allowed Calvillo to take her down and almost lock in an armbar. In the second round, Calderwood was able to keep the fight on the feet and land strikes at range. She was having the same success in the third round until Calvillo secured a takedown with 30 seconds left and locked in a rear naked choke with 10 seconds left. Calderwood was able to survive the submission, but it cost her the fight. Cynthia Calvillo beats Joanne Calderwood by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).
Paul Felder and Stevie Ray meet in one of the most anticipated matches of the evening. The two lightweight that are known for their striking surprised everyone by spending the first half of round one battling in a wrestling clinch. The promised fireworks were put on hold until Felder landed a massive knee to Ray’s head. Ray went crashing to the canvas and Fedler followed. Ray recovered briefly but was put out for good by some devastating elbows. Paul Felder over Stevie Ray by 1st Round TKO.
Jack Marshman came out firing to start his fight with Ryan Janes. He hit everything with countless heavy shots but the Canadian continued to march forward. After a close second round, Janes was able to land the better shots in the third round. He pushed the action and landed several flurries on Marshman. Though Janes came on late, he wasn’t able to tilt the fight in his favor. Jack Marshman beats Ryan Janes by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, and 29-28).
Paul Craig had a very strange strategy against Khalil Rountree. He stayed way on the outside not engaging. He allowed Rountree to pick his shots while Craig circled around the cage. He continued this strategy until Rountree landed a huge shot knocking him out with 4 seconds left in the round. The most controversial moment of the contest was that Rountree stood over Craig for several seconds while Craig lied unconscious. Khalil Rountree beats Paul Craig by 1st round KO
Two massive heavyweights Justin Willis and James Mulheron kicked off the main card in a slow paced fight. Both guys appeared to be looking to land one big shot. Willis was looking for his left hand, while Mulheron was looking for his right hand. Willis was able to get two takedowns through the fight, which helped secure him the decision victory.
