The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons lock up Sunday Night in Houston with the NFL championship on the line, but it was the UFC that got to put on a show in Houston first.
The Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung stepped back in the octagon facing a three and a half year layoff and seemed to have not missed a beat. Jung faced off against Dennis Bermudez, and came in as the underdog. Bermudez was able to start the fight off landing several overhand rights, but Jung continued to track Bermudez down, and deflecting his takedown attempts. Jung was able to land a well timed uppercut on Bermudez, which sent “the Menace” crashing face first to the canvas, giving him a first round knockout.
Felice Herrig showed why she shouldn’t have been overlooked by many, when she took on the undefeated Alexa Grasso. Herrig was the one that was more aggressive and quickly found the rhythm of Grasso. Herrig constantly countered all of Grasso’s attacks in the first two rounds with overhand rights and body punches. Grasso started to get comfortable in the third round, and hurt Herrig as the round end, but it wasn’t enough for Grasso to steal the fight. Herrig wins by unanimous decision. Herrig called for a fight with Paige Vanzant or Michelle Waterson next.
James Vick had the best performance of his career against Abel Trujillo. Vick used his long range to pick apart the shorter fighter from a distance, and stuffed several takedown attempts by Trujillo. In the third round, Vick landed a flying double knee on Trujillo that stumbled him, and was able to finish the fight by placing a D’Arce choke on Trujillo. Vick by wins 3rd round submission.
The closest fight of the night was Ovince St. Preux fighting Volkan Oezdimar, who took the fight on two weeks notice. Both fighters came out throwing heavy leather in the first round. The fight slowed the next two rounds, but both guys landed a lot in a back in forth fight. St. Preux finished the third round by rocking the Swiss fighter but unable to finish him off. The judges gave the razor closer decision to Oezdimar. Oezdimar wins in a upset by split decision.
Marcel Fortuna, took a fight against Anthony Hamilton on two weeks notice. Fortuna was making his UFC debut and moved up to heavyweight to face Hamilton. He was giving up 48 pounds. In a true David vs Goliath style, Fortuna landed a hard right hand as Hamilton was moving forward, causing Hamilton to crash to the canvas face down. Fortuna wins by 1st round KO.
Invicta FC champion, Angela Hill returned to the UFC after a 4-0 run in 2016, to face Jessica Andrade. Andrade welcomed her back by hitting her with everything but the kitchen sink. Andrade constantly got to the pocket, where she unloaded a barrage of shots to the body and head of Hill. Hill attempted to fire back, but was outclassed in the contest. The fight was highly entertaining and probable the best fight so far this year. Andrade won by unanimous decision.
