UFC 220 Recap: Gian Villante gets the split decision win
The second showcase on the main card of UFC 220 was a match-up between veteran light heavyweight contender Gian Villante and Francimar Barroso. Villante came in with a record of 5-6 in the UFC(15-9 overall) while Barroso came in holding a UFC record of 4-3-1(19-6-1 overall).
Round 1: Gian Villante immediately takes the center of the octagon. After Villante lands a couple of good right hands, Barroso returns fire with a hard uppercut. Villante continues to land punches, seemingly hurting Barroso. Villante moves in, missing on a couple of punches and a head kick. Some solid kicks from Barroso. Gian is just walking him down, throwing a lot but missing on most. Not a ton going on towards the end of the round, but they end on a high note with a wild exchange to end it. Round 2: Villante picks up where he left off, aggressively walking Barroso down. A fun exchange takes place, with both men landing good shots. Following a brief intermission due to a groin strike, they exchange some solid kicks. Barroso lands a hard body kick and a good combination. He follows those up with a solid leg kick and a knee to the body. 60 seconds of circling without much being thrown ends the round with an impatient Boston crowd beginning to show frustration. Round 3: The round starts with a solid right hand from Villante. He follows that up with a good 3 punch combination. They both land hard left hands. Villante whiffs on a few different kicks and Barroso doesn’t, as he lands two hard, unanswered body kicks. Barroso lands a good right hand but that’s where his offense stopped. Villante stayed aggressive, keeping Barroso’s back to the cage. A few missed Villante punches and some booing from the crowd end the round. TheMMATakeover scored the round 10-9 Villante.
