UFC 219 Recap: Hooker pulls off the upset over Diakiese

0

With John Lineker vs. Jimmie Rivera being scrapped due to a late injury by Lineker and Rivera ultimately being removed from the card completely, the lightweight bout between Marc Diakiese and Dan Hooker was promoted to the Main Card. Diakiese is coming off the first loss of his career, most recently coming out on the wrong end of a close split decision loss to Drakkar Close. Hooker is 4-3 in the UFC, alternating wins and losses, but he is coming off a KO victory over Ross Pearson and hoping to carry the momentum to back-to-back wins for the first time in his UFC career.

These two clearly had a lot to say about one another leading up to the fight. Hooker thinks Diakiese’s flashy striking is “smoke and mirrors”. Diakiese, despite asking for this fight, says of Hooker; “He is not a fighter” and “should be working in and office or something”. Diakiese says he finds it easy to fight Muay Thai guys because they have no movement and just move forward. He also promised a dominant KO victory. Let’s see if his prediction came true.

First Round:

The fight starts slow with both guys feeling each other out. Hooker attempts a leg kick but Diakiese catches it. Not much action but Diakies is switching postions. He attempts a spinning kick but misses. Diakiese is attacking the leg of Hooker with straight kicks. Hooker attempting to land a kick of his own but missed. Hooker again attempts a leg kick but it’s again caught by Diakiese. Diakiese goes for a takedown but it’s Hooker who ends up getting it with seconds left. Diakiese’s back is against the Octagon and he’s able to stand up as the bell rings. You can hear some boos in the crowd. Justified after that round.

The MMA Takeover scored the round 10-9 Diakiese.

Second Round:

Diakiese again opens up the round with a leg kick and just misses on a left hook. Hooker lands a nice kick to the body. Diakiese switching stances again and fighting in southpaw. The fighters clinch against the cage but not much action. Diakiese is controlling the underhook of Hooker. They separate and it’s Diakiese with more leg kicks. Hooker shoots for a takedown against the cage and gets it. About two minutes left and Hooker sinks in a body triangle. Diakiese is tired and he’s in trouble here. Diakiese is trying to attack the leg of Hooker but no damage is being done. Hooker is taking his time here and Diakiese reverses position and gets on top. Only seconds left and the bell rings. Hooker has a small cut over his eye now.

The MMA Takeover scored the round 10-9 Hooker.

Third Round:

Diakiese comes out with a couple of haymakers and Hooker lands a leg kick to the body. Diakiese shoots in and Hooker sinks in a guillotine and it’s deep. It’s over as Diakiese taps immediately. Nice upset win for Hooker here. He wins his second straight while Diakiese drops his second in a row.

Official Outcome: Dan Hooker Beats Marc Diakiese by 3rd Round Submission (guillotine choke).
