Estimated PPV buys for UFC 215 are extremely low
MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer is estimating that UFC 215 brought in only 100,000 PPV buys for UFC 215. This has to come as a disappointment to the UFC promotion as they saw numbers exceed 850,000 PPV buys for UFC 214. UFC 215 ended up with a headliner title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko. This was after the original main event between Demetrious Johnson and Ray Borg was pulled due to Borg falling ill. Nunes ended up winning the women’s bantamweight championship over Shevchenko by split decision.
There are no official numbers for UFC 216 yet, but early reports show that the event did not do much better. Early reports show an estimated 120,000 PPV buys. An event that saw Demetrious Johnson set a UFC record for most successful title defenses. Johnson defeated Borg with a ridiculous armbar in the 5th round. Also, the event featured a fight between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee for the men’s interim lightweight champion. Ferguson came out victorious with a 3rd round submission.
If numbers ended up being what they are projected to be, this will be the third time in the last four UFC PPV events that they failed to reach 200,000 PPV buys. On the plus side, there are many great fights to end the year. With the return of Georges St Pierre taking on Michael Bisping, and Max Holloway taking on Frankie Edgar. Also, we will we see Conor McGregor anytime soon?
