The UFC stated UFC 219 would be headlined by a big name, and they followed through. Many thought it would be Conor McGregor, but after reports that he was pulled from the card, the UFC might have turned to his rival Nate Diaz. It has been announced that the UFC is in talks to have Diaz challenge Tyron Woodley for Woodley’s UFC welterweight crown.
There were pictures of Diaz training that circulated the internet this week. Woodley also announced that he could be making a fight announcement soon, and hinted on the UFC Norfolk broadcast that he could fight once again in 2017.
Woodley also hinted at fighting someone outside of his weight class.
Ariel Helwani also referred to it on Twitter
This was the rabbit in the hat I eluded to yesterday on the show. No deal yet, I’m told. They are getting creative. Couple other ideas, too. Event is 6 weeks away and no main event. https://t.co/96XuOBHzll

Woodley would be entering the contest off a decision win over Demain Maia at UFC 214 in July. This was Woodley’s 3rd title defense since winning the title over Robbie Lawler at UFC 201.
Diaz would be entering the contest off a decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202 in July of 2016. Diaz has bounced back and forth between lightweight and welterweight for the majority of his career.
The fight is expected to be main event of UFC 219. The event is scheduled for December 30th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The UFC has not yet confirmed the fiight.
