Justin Gaethje stepped inside the Octagon for the first time with a perfect record on Friday night. The former World Series of Fighting champion faced off with Michael Johnson. The two put on an instant classic. Gaethje and Johnson stood in front of each other and just unloaded everything. Both fighters were rocked several times until Johnson sent Gaethje crumbling to the ground at the end of the first round but was unable to stop him. He started off the second round by unloaded everything on Gaethje again, who took Johnson’s best shots and continued to press forward. Gaethje made a dramatic comeback when he hurt Johnson with a body shot. Johnson attempted to stay away from Gaethje, but the former WSOF champion unloaded hard shots and dropped Johnson with big uppercuts forcing the referee to stop the fight. Jesse Taylor and Dhiego Lima met in the finals of season 25 of the Ultimate Fighter. Both fighters spent weeks in the “TUF” house, where they both beat three other fighters to get inside the house. Lima was a contestant on the 19th season of the Ultimate Fighter and reached the finals before losing to Eddie Gordon. Taylor was on the 7th season of the Ultimate Fighter and reached the finals but was removed due to poor behavior outside the Octagon.
In the actual fight, Taylor dominated Lima. He landed multiple takedowns in the first and second round before being able to secure a rear-naked choke victory. Taylor won all four fights in route to the season title with ease. Jesse Taylor beats Dhiego Lima by 2nd round submission.
Two undefeated highly touted prospects Marc Diakiese and Drakkar Klose squared off in one of the most anticipated matches of the weekend. The two feuded on Twitter and got into a shoving match during the weigh-ins. Not many people were giving Klose a chance against Diakiese, but he proved them all wrong. Klose took the fight to Diakiese. He landed several heavy leg kicks that took out the Englishman’s base. He added in several takedowns to secure the win. The MMA Takeover scored the fight 29-28 for Klose, giving him the first two rounds. Drakkar Klose beats Marc Diakiese by split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
Nick Roehrick made his UFC debut on just 3 days notice and his opponent, Jared Cannonier made him pay for it. Cannonier showed the newcomer that he wasn’t on his level. Cannonier was much quicker than Roehrick and hit him with hard shots for the entire fight. He was able to finally put Roehrick out of his misery in the third round. Cannonier landed a high kick that staggered Roehrick and then followed up with hard elbows and punches on the ground until the fight was stopped. Roehrick displayed amazing heart, but he wasn’t any match for Cannonier. Jared Cannonier beats Nick Roehrick by 3rd TKO.
Brad Tavares and Elias Theodorou had a back and forth fight for 15 minutes. Theodorou pushed the pace and landed several kicks and a few takedowns. Tavares answered back with some strong punches in the pocket. The fight was a toss up with just over two minutes left, but Tavares was able to perform a “butt drag” on a Theodorou takedown attempt which gave Theodorou’s back briefly. The reversal probably gave Tavares the fight. The MMA Takeover scored the fight 29-28 for Tavares. Brad Tavares beats Elias Theodorou by unanimous decision (29-29, 29-28, 29-28).
Jordan Johnson squeaked out a low output fight over Marcel Fortuna. He was able to get three takedowns during the fight, which probably gave him the victory. The MMA Takeover scored it 29-28 for Fortuna. Jordan Johnson beats Marcel Fortuna (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
