With longtime New England MMA staple Matt Bessette getting his long-awaited call to the UFC, CES MMA was scrambling to find a new main event for their CES 48 event. The organization had Bessette, their reigning featherweight champion, set to face off against Jamall Emmers in the headlining fight before Bessette got the promotion to the UFC to face Enrique Barzola on short notice. CES will turn to another New England MMA staple in Greg Rebello. The organization stated that Rebello will face off against veteran fighter, Travis Wiuff for the vacant heavyweight title.
Rebello is a veteran of the Ultimate Fighter show and the Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series (DWTNCS). The heavyweight nicknamed “Ribz” will fight for the 17th time for CES, He last appeared in November when he beat Derrick Brown by 1st round TKO. Prior to that, Rebello lost to Azunna Anyanwu on the first episode of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contenders Series.
Wiuff is a well-traveled veteran. He has fought in the UFC, Pride FC, Bellator, IFL, and several other organizations. Over his 16 years professional career, he has amassed an astonishing 75-21 record. He also became the Yamma Pit fighting champion. Wiuff has not fought since October of 2016 when he defeated Ron Carter by submission. He was gonna fight in last week’s “Gender Wars” organization but withdrew last minute due to rumors of the fights being fixed. The organization was being promoted by former UFC fighter, Brad Kohler. The main event of the even had a male face a female in modified MMA rules. Wiuff was scheduled to face Wes Sims in a bare-knuckled fight.
Rebello and Wiuff will fight for the vacant heavyweight title after the previous champion Juliano Coutinho retired.
CES 48 is scheduled for February 2nd at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. The main card will be broadcasted on AXS TV.
