Diego Sanchez moved down to lightweight after having a successful run in the UFC welterweight division. He was 3-0 in the division heading into the fight. Clay Guida was on a 3 fight winning streak, and was ranked in the top 10.
Both fighters were known for entertaining fights. They were due to lock horns.
Before the fight starts, Sanchez runs at Guida, who lands a right hand. For the next 5 seconds both guys throw bombs at each other, landing every shot. Guida attempts to back up, but is hit by 3 straight uppercuts by Sanchez. Sanchez 4 uppercut hurts Guida. Sanchez lands a flying knee to the body. Sanchez unloads about 10 punches on Guida. The 2nd round starts and Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida lands a double leg takedown. Guida opens up ground and pound. Sanchez lands elbows from the bottom. Guida responds with his own shots. Sanchez attempts a Kimura, and Guida lands some ground and pound to get out of it. Sanchez throws up a triangle choke, but Guida punches himself out of it. Sanchez starts to land huge elbows from the body. The best elbows from the bottom I have ever seen. About 20 in a row. Guida responds with hard hammerfists. Sanchez throws up and armbar as the round ends. 10-9 Guida.
Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida responds with his own 1-2 combination. Guida lands a left hook. Sanchez grazes Guida with a high kick. Guida lands a left and then follows it up with a straight right. Sanchez lands an uppercut and then stuffs a Guida takedown attempt. Sanchez lands a right hand, and Guida responds with a right hook. Guida lands two straight right hands, and Sanchez counters with a left hook. Guida lands a nice overhand right, and Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida lands an overhand right, and Sanchez counters with a body punch. Guida lands a right hand, and shoots in for a double. Sanchez stuffs the takedown and spins behind Guida. Guida scrambles and lands on top. Sanchez locks in an arm triangle. Guida gets out and starts to land some ground and pound. Sanchez locks on a deep Kimura, and after fighting for it, Sanchez changes to an armbar. Guida pulls out and lands some ground and pound as the round ends. Really close round. I score it 10-9 Guida. I scored the round 28-28 draw.

Sanchez wins split decision.
This win propelled Sanchez into the title fight against BJ Penn, though he would lose. Both Sanchez and Guida would go on to have very long careers in the UFC.
