Unfortunately we don’t have any UFC action this weekend, but fear not. Let’s revisit Keith Shillan’s top 25 fights in UFC History to get our fix. We’ll countdown through the week until we reach number 1. If you watch all five fights each day, it’s just like watching a main card!

#10. Jose Aldo Jr vs Chad Mendes 2

October 25th. 2014

Main Event of UFC 179

Background:

A rematch between perfect clashing styles. This matchup pitted Aldo’s speed vs Mendes power. It matched up Aldo’s takedown defense and submission skills vs Mendes’ wrestling skills. Aldo was on a 18 fight winning streak, and had defended the WEC/UFC featherweight title for 10 straight fights. Mendes entered the fight on a 5 fight win streak, and had only 1 career lose (to Aldo) heading into the fight.

The fight took place in Aldo’s hometown.

Action:

The first round starts with a crazy pace. Mendes comes out pressuring. Mendes lands a left hook. Aldo opens up with a 3 punch combination. Aldo lands a left hook to the body. He also lands a left hook. Mendes lands a right hand. He lands several leg kicks. Mendes lands a left hook that drops Aldo. Aldo gets up quickly and lands a stiff jab. Mendes responds by landing 3 jabs of his own. Aldo lands a 1-2 combination. Mendes lands a very hard leg kick, while Aldo lands a kick to the body. Both fighters exchange jabs. Mendes lands an uppercut, then lands two left hooks. Aldo lands another 1-2 combination. Aldo lands a body kick. Both exchange hard leg kicks. Mendes lands a left hook. Mendes lands a jab and an overhand right. Then they get an accidental eye poke. The ref stops the fight, and the doctor checks on Aldo. Aldo opens up the fight with a 3 punch combination and follows up with a step knee. Mendes shoots in for a double leg, and takes Aldo down. However, Aldo hurries to the feet. Aldo lands a left hook that floors Mendes. Aldo opens up some ground and pound. Aldo moves to mount, but Mendes scrambles to the feet. Mendes lands a right hand, but Aldo lands a very clean uppercut, left hook, straight right combination. The bell sounds, and Aldo unloads a huge 1-2 combination that drops Mendes. The two punches were way after the bell. Somehow Aldo was not penalized a point. 10-9 round for Aldo

The second round begins and both fighters exchange leg kicks. Mendes works to the clinch and lands a knee to the groin. After a short break, they continue. Both fighters exchange leg kicks. Mendes lands an overhand right. Aldo lands punch to the body. Mendes lands a body kick. Aldo lands 3 stiff jabs. Mendes counters with a 1-2 combination and a kick to the legs. Aldo lands a hard hook to the body. Mendes lands a right hand. Aldo lands another punch to the body. Mendes lands a left hook, and several leg kicks. The round is much slower than the crazy pace of the first round. Aldo is stalking while Mendes is working angles. Mendes lands a left hook as the round ends. Very very close round. 10-9 Mendes.

Third roud starts and both guys comes out firing. Aldo lands a right hand, but Mendes accidentally pokes Aldo again. During a break in action. The ref sternly warns Mendes about the eye pokes. Action continues and Aldo lands left hook. Mendes lands a huge left hand. Both fighters start to exchange bombs. Aldo lands a 1-2 punch combination to the body. Mendes responds with his own 1-2. Mendes lands a right hook. Aldo lands a left hook that stuns Mendes. Aldo lands another 1-2 combination and a stiff jab. Mendes lands an uppercut. Mendes lands a left hook, and a left hand. Mendes lands a gigantic uppercut that hurts Aldo. He follows with a left hook that really hurts Aldo. Aldo lands a left hook as Mendes rushes in for the kill. Mendes lands another uppercut, but Aldo lands an overhand right that stumbles Mendes again. Aldo rushes in and lands a step knee. Aldo lands a 1-2 combination and a left hook. Mendes shoots in and Aldo stuffs a takedown. As Aldo is sprawled, he lands short punches to the side of Mendes head. Mendes gets to his feet, Aldo lands a left hook, but Mendes shoots in on a double and lifts Aldo up and slams him hard to the mat. Aldo gets to his feet, with Mendes locked around his waist. Mendes lands 6 hard foot stomps to Aldo’s left foot. Aldo spins around and they clinch. The two fighters say something to each other and smile. Mendes lands a huge left hook before the round ends. Really good round. Close again, but I give it to Mendes.

The fourth round begins with Mendes pressuring the action. Mendes lands a leg kick and a push kick. Mendes follows it up with another push kick. Mendes lands a left hook to the body. The challenger lands an uppercut and a left hook. Mendes lands a switch kick left high kick. Mendes lands a 1-2 combination. Mendes is pressing the action and Aldo seems to be taking the round off. Mendes lands a right hook. He lands two more uppercuts and Aldo is cut. Aldo lands a right hand, and then Mendes complains of an eye poke, but the ref refuses to stop the action. Mendes lands a hard left hook and overhands right. Mendes lands another overhand right. Aldo lands 4 jabs, and a 1-2 combination to end the round. Clearly a Mendes round. 10-9 Mendes.

Mendes opens the round by landing a right hook. Mendes follows up with 2 left hooks. Aldo lands a left hook of his own. Mendes lands a body kick. Mendes lands a double leg takedown. He holds the champion down for about 30 seconds before landing a knee to the body. Aldo gets up. Aldo lands a left hook and then a clean 1-2 combination. Aldo lands a step knee. Aldo blocks a takedown from Mendes and gets Mendes back. Mendes scrambles to his feet, and exchange bombs on the feet. Mendes lands an uppercut. Aldo responds with a hard straight right. He lands another straight right that rocks Mendes. Mendes lands his own right, but the champion lands another right hand. Aldo stops a takedown from Mendes. Aldo lands a body shot, while Mendes lands an overhand right. Both guys exchange bombs for the last 10 seconds of the fight. Close round, but I give it to Aldo. However, I scored the fight 48-47 for Mendes.

Results and Notes:

Aldo wins a unanimous decision. I am in the minority, but I scored the fight to Mendes, though it was razer close. Only the 4th round was clearly won by either fighter.

Aldo would fight Conor McGregor in his next fight and finally lose the belt. He would fight and beat Frankie Edgar (again) for the interim title, and after McGregor was stripped, he got the title back.

Mendes would go 1-2 after this fight, and be suspended two years for a USADA violation.


#9. Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida

June 20th, 2009

Background:

Diego Sanchez moved down to lightweight after having a successful run in the UFC welterweight division. He was 3-0 in the division heading into the fight. Clay Guida was on a 3 fight winning streak, and was ranked in the top 10.

Both fighters were known for entertaining fights. They were due to lock horns.

Action:

Before the fight starts, Sanchez runs at Guida, who lands a right hand. For the next 5 seconds both guys throw bombs at each other, landing every shot. Guida attempts to back up, but is hit by 3 straight uppercuts by Sanchez. Sanchez 4 uppercut hurts Guida. Sanchez lands a flying knee to the body. Sanchez unloads about 10 punches on Guida. Sanchez lands a flying knee. Sanchez unloads two huge uppercuts. Sanchez is teeing off on Guida. Sanchez lands a 3 punch combination. Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination but Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination of his own. Sanchez lands another flying knee to the body. Sanchez lands a left hook, two uppercuts and a right hook combination. Guida takes Sanchez down with a double leg takedown. Guida lands some ground and pound before Sanchez scrambles to his feet. Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Sanchez lands a high kick that sends Guida crashing to the mat. Guida looked out but somehow popped up to his feet. Sanchez lands a hard straight left. Sanchez lands a flying knee to the body and a 1-2 combination. Guida lands a right hand. Sanchez unloads 5 straight uppercuts. Both guys clinch. Sanchez grabs a body lock and slams Guida. Guida scrambles to his feet and Sanchez lands a right hook. Big round for Sanchez. 10-8 Sanchez.

The 2nd round starts and Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida lands a double leg takedown. Guida opens up ground and pound. Sanchez lands elbows from the bottom. Guida responds with his own shots. Sanchez attempts a Kimura, and Guida lands some ground and pound to get out of it. Sanchez throws up a triangle choke, but Guida punches himself out of it. Sanchez starts to land huge elbows from the body. The best elbows from the bottom I have ever seen. About 20 in a row. Guida responds with hard hammerfists. Sanchez throws up and armbar as the round ends. 10-9 Guida.

Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida responds with his own 1-2 combination. Guida lands a left hook. Sanchez grazes Guida with a high kick. Guida lands a left and then follows it up with a straight right. Sanchez lands an uppercut and then stuffs a Guida takedown attempt. Sanchez lands a right hand, and Guida responds with a right hook. Guida lands two straight right hands, and Sanchez counters with a left hook. Guida lands a nice overhand right, and Sanchez lands a 1-2 combination. Guida lands an overhand right, and Sanchez counters with a body punch. Guida lands a right hand, and shoots in for a double. Sanchez stuffs the takedown and spins behind Guida. Guida scrambles and lands on top. Sanchez locks in an arm triangle. Guida gets out and starts to land some ground and pound. Sanchez locks on a deep Kimura, and after fighting for it, Sanchez changes to an armbar. Guida pulls out and lands some ground and pound as the round ends. Really close round. I score it 10-9 Guida. I scored the round 28-28 draw.

Results and Notes:

Sanchez wins split decision.

This win propelled Sanchez into the title fight against BJ Penn, though he would lose. Both Sanchez and Guida would go on to have very long careers in the UFC.


#8. Randy Couture vs Pedro Rizzo 1

March 4th, 2001

Main Event of UFC 31

Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, New Jersey

Background:

Couture was 37 years old, and the heavyweight champion. He was a perfect 5-0 in the UFC when he faced Rizzo. Rizzo was 27 years old. He was a great striker with a 11-1 MMA record and a 6-1 UFC record.

Action:

1st round begins with Couture landing a left hook. Rizzo pumps a jab off Couture’s head. Couture grabs a clinch, but Rizzo moves away and lands a hook. Couture clinches again. Couture starts to dirty box Rizzo landing hooks and uppercuts. Couture lands a nice knee as the break. As they break, Couture lands a double leg takedown. Couture starts to posture up and lands heavy ground and pound on Rizzo, who is pressed against the cage. Couture lands big elbows and hammerfists, looks like John McCarthy might stop the fight, but Rizzo is saved by the bell. Big round for Couture. 10-8 Couture.

2nd round begins, Rizzo lands a super hard leg kick that drops Couture, Couture attempts to grab a leg but Rizzo is sprawled out on him. Couture works up to his feet. Rizzo lands a stiff jab and a very hard leg kick. Rizzo lands a hook and follows it up with a 1-2 punch. Rizzo stuffs two takedown attempts from Couture. Coutre gets up and lands a right hand, but looks very tired. Rizzo lands a huge leg kick and then follows up with a left hook. Rizzo lands two more hard leg kicks. Rizzo lands a jab and is taking over. Rizzo lands a 1-2 combination and another leg kick. He stuffs another takedown. Rizzo lands a left hook. Couture clinches but is hit by two knees from Rizzo. Rizzo lands a right hand that drops Couture and follows up with short punches from on top as the round ends. 10-9 Rizzo.

Third round begins and Couture lands 2 straight right hands. Couture clinches and lands 3 uppercuts. As they break, he shoots for a takedown but is stuffed. Theyt have a break in action to check a cut on Couture. The doctor says it is okay and they go back at it. Couture lands a double leg takedown and starts landing short elbows and punches for the remainder of the round. 10-9 Couture.

Fourth round begins, Rizzo lands a left hook. Both fighters clinch. Couture lands a ton of hooks and uppercuts in the clinch, while Rizzo lands a knee. They break and Couture lands a 3 punch combination. Rizzo lands a left hook. Rizzo stuffs a single leg takedown attempt and lands a hard leg kick. Rizzo stuffs another takedown attempt from Couture. While sprawled out on Couture, he lands some short shots. Couture works his way up and lands another takedown. He lands several hammerfists and elbows from on top. Couture attempts a key lock, Rizzo gets out. Couture finishes the round with more ground and pound. Close round. 10-9 Couture.

Fifth round begins. Rizzo lands a very hard leg kick. He stuffs a takedown attempt and lands a 1-2 combination. Rizzo stuffs another takedown from a tired Couture. Rizzo lands a leg kick and a left hook. Rizzo stuffs another takedown and while sprawled out, lands short shots to the side of Couture’s head. Couture gets up, and lands a right hand, followed by a left hook. Rizzo lands a right hand. Couture misses a takedown. Rizzo lands a brutal leg kick. Rizzo lands another 1-2 combination. A final leg kicks drop Couture, and Rizzo flurries with several punches as the bell sounds. 10-9 for Rizzo. I scored the fight 48-46 for Couture.

Results and Notes:

Couture wins a unanimous decision.

They would rematch at UFC 34, and Couture would dominate and win with a 3rd round TKO.

Couture was thought to be on the way out at 37 and Rizzo on the rise at 27. However, Couture would go on to have a legendary career winning 5 UFC belts, while Rizzo would never reach a UFC main event again.


#7. Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson

September 23rd, 2013

Main Event of UFC 165

Background:

Jon Jones headed into the fight as the undisputed UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and the consensus pound for pound king. Jones entered the fight 19-1 (only lose came by disqualification). He had successfully defended his belt 5 straight times. Alexander Gustafsson entered the fight winning 6 straight fights in the UFC.

Action:

The fight starts with Jones landing a spinning back kick to the body. Jones misses a double leg takedown defense, but lands another spinning back kick to the body. Jones lands three straight front leg sidekicks to Gustafsson’s front knee. Jones lands a kick to the body, and Gustafsson lands two hard leg kicks. Jones lands a superman punch and Gustafsson counters with an uppercut. Both fighters exchange hard leg kicks. Gustafsson lands a lefdt hook, and Jones lands a kick to the body. Gustafsson lands a right hand and a left hook that cuts Jones. Gustafsson lands a kick to the body, and Jones responds with a spinning back kick to the body. Gustafsson lands a 1-2 combination and follows up with a overhand right. Jones lands two hard leg kicks, and a third spinning back kick to the body. Gustafsson surprises everyone and takes Jones down with a double leg takedown. Jones gets up and accidentally pokes Gustafsson in the eye. After a break in the action, they continue and Jones lands a spinning back elbow. Jones lands a body kick, and a left elbow as the round ends. Very close round. I give it to Gustafsson 10-9

2nd round begins with Jones landing an inside leg kick that buckles Gustafsson’s leg. Jones attempts to kick again and Gustafsson catches the kick, and trips Jones, who gets back up immediately. Jones shoots in for a double leg takedown but misses. He clinches and misses a trip. Both fighters land left hooks. Jones lands a body kick and a switch kick to the head. Gustafsson lands a left hook and a hard leg kick. Gustafsson catches another kick from Jones, who somersaults out and shoots in for a double leg takedown but can’t get Gustafsson down. Jones lands a push kick to Gustafsson’s knee. Gustafsson lands a right hand but Jones counters with two hard leg kicks. Jones lands a high kick and Gustafsson lands a nice uppercut as the round end. Another close round but I score it 10-9 Jones.

Third round starts and Gustafsson lands a right hand and an uppercut. He follows up with another straight right hand. Jones lands a spinning back kick to the body. Gustafsson lands a jab to the body and then the head. He also lands a right hand. Jones lands a high kick and Gustafsson counters with an uppercut. The two fighters exchange body kicks. Gustafsson lands a hard leg kick. He follows it up with a uppercut and two right hands. Jones lands a high kick and a left hook. Jones lands a push kick to the knee and two jabs. Jones lands a combination of a body kick and left hand. He follows up with push kicks to the body and the knee. Gustafsson lands a stiff jab. Jones stuffs a takedown attempts. Gustaffson lands a stiff jab, and then follows it up with a right hand and a body kick. Gustafsson lands a jab, but Jones counters with a spinning back elbow. Gustafsson lands a left hook, and Jones lands a stiff jab as the round ends. Another close round. I score it 10-9 for Gustafsson.

The fourth round begins and Jones lands a left hook. Gustafsson lands a hard leg kick. Jones lands a body kick and follow up with a right hand. Jones lands a short elbow, but Gustafsson counters with a right hand. Both fighters exchange double jabs. Jones lands a push kick to the body and follows up with two hard leg kicks. Gustafsson lands a left hook. He then follows up with a 4 strike combination. Jones misses a takedown and both fighters exchange jabs. Gustafsson lands an overhand right. Jones lands a high kick and then a left hook. Jones lands a crushing spinning back elbow that hurts Gustafsson bad. Jones follows up with a knee to the head. He clinches and lands a knee and 4 left elbows. He busts Gustafsson open. Jones lands a flying knee as the round ends. Jones wins the round 10-9.

The final round begins with Gustafsson lands a left hook. He follows it up with a right hand and a left hook. Jones lands a body kick and a hard inside kick. They clinch and Gustafsson lands two uppercuts. Jones lands a superman punch and follows up with a hard step elbow. Jones stuffs a takedown from Gustafsson and lands a 1-2 combination. Jones finally takes Gustafsson down with a double leg takedown. Gustafsson gets up quickly. Jones lands a left hand and then back to back switch kicks to the head. Jones follows it up with two high kicks. Gustafsson jabs, and Jones lands another high kick. Gustafsson lands an uppercut, and Jones lands a headkick and an elbow. Jones finishes the round by landing a flying knee. I score the round 10-9 for Jones. I scored the fight 48-47 for Jones.

Results and Notes:

Jones wins by unanimous decision. The win would give him the record for most successful title defenses. Jones would win three more fights after this fight. However, he has stunted his career with criminal charges, drug use, and a USADA violation.

Gustafsson would get another shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight title, but would lose to Daniel Cormier in a close contest.


#6. Gilbert Melendez vs Diego Sanchez

October 19th, 2013

Main Card of UFC 166

Toyota Center, Houston, Texas

Background:

2 long time lightweight greats that was constantly in entertaining fights that somehow never faced each other. Lucky for everyone, they finally met.

Action:

First round starts and Sanchez catches a kick from Melendez and gets a takedown. Melendez gives up his back, and Sanchez sinks in his hooks and looks for a rear naked choke. Melendez stands up and Sanchez falls off. Melendez lands a three punch combination. Melendes lands a right hand to the body and then the head. Melendez stuffs a takedown attempt and lands a knee and a right hand as Sanchez gets up. Melendez lands two punches. Melendez stuffs another takedown attempt and lands a hard punch to the body. Melendez lands a 1-2 combination and follows it up with a huge right hand. Sanchez lands a kick to the body. Melendez responds with another huge right hand. Melendez lands an uppercut that cuts Sanchez open. Sanchez counters with a left hook. Both guys sit in the pocket and start throwing bombs. Melendez stuffs another takedown attempt, and lands an uppercut. Sanchez responds with two kicks to the body. Melendez lands a left hook, and Sanchez lands a 3 punch combination Melendez lands a high kick and both guys start landing bombs again. Melendez drops Sanchez with a straight right. He lands 3 hard left hands as Sanchez gets up and the round ends. 10-9 Melendez.

2nd round begins and Melendez lands 3 right hands. Sanchez counters with a 1-2 combination. Melendez lands a right hand, and Sanchez lands an uppercut. Melendez lands a high kick and a kick to the body. Sanchez lands a flying knee. Melendez respond with a body and head combination. Melendez follows up with a 1-2 combination. Melendez lands another right hand. Sanchez slips on a high kick and gets tagged with 3 right hands on the way up. Melendez lands two more right hands. Sanchez lands a body kick, and Sanchez lands another right hand. Melendez follows up with a 3 punch combination. Sanchez gets a double leg takedown, but Melendez gets right up. Sanchez lands a right hand and leg kick. Melendez jabs and both fighters exchange right hands. Melendez finishes the round by landing a 1-2 combination, stuffing a takedown and landing another right hand. 10-9 Melendez.

The third round begins and Sanchez lands an uppercut. Melendez counters with a 1-2 combination. Both fighters get in the pocket and start landing bombs. Melendez counters with back to back 1-2 combination. Both fighters start throwing bombs again. Melendez lands 3 straight right hands. And they both start throwing bombs again. Really crazy action. The fighters exchange left hands. Melendez lands 3 1-2 combinations. Sanchez lands a body kick and a leg kick. Melendez counters with 2 right hands. Sanchez lands his own 3 punch combination. Melendez lands a 1-2 combination. Sanchez lands a left hook, and 2 right hands. Melendez lands a right hand, but is dropped by a huge uppercut. Sanchez takes the back of a downed Melendez. Melendez scramble but Sanchez locks in a guillotine choke. Melendez gets out and they scramble to their feet. Melendez lands a knee, elbow and right hand combination. He follows up with a right hand. Sanchez lands a hrd leg kick, but Melendez lands a 3 punch combination. Sanchez misses a punch and Melendez takes his back and takes him down. Sanchez lands a back elbow and then a very slick switch. They scramble back the the feet. Sanchez lands a body kick, and Melendez lands a jab. Sanchez lands a body kick. For the last 10 seconds of the fight, both guys stand in the pocket and throw everything they have. Crazy ending. One of the best rounds ever. 10-9 Sanchez.

Results and Notes:

Melendez wins a unanimous decision. As the fight ends, Joe Rogan says that it was “the greatest fight I have ever seen”.

Both fighters would have mixed results after this fight. Melendez might still get back into title contention, but Sanchez seems to be at the end of his career.
