If you are an active MMA fan or Jiu Jitsu fan for that matter, I’m sure you’ve heard or said yourself “Man he submitted a ton of people.” Well that got me wondering… who has literally submitted a ton of people by weight (2000 lbs.)?
Now we will take a look at one of my favorite martial artists in any combat sport Demian Augusto Maia Baptista 25-8 MMA (19-8 UFC). Maia was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on November 6, 1977. He first began in the world of martial arts at the age of 4 in Judo. At age 12 he began training in both Kung-Fu and Karate. He didn’t even begin his Jiu Jitsu training untill the age of 19 when he decided that BJJ would be his focus. He dedicated himself to the sport and earned his black belt in only four years and 7 months under Fabio Gurgel at Alliance.
Maia made a decision to compete in the Confederacao de Jiu Jitsu Olimpico World Cup in 2002 disregarding Gurgel’s orders to not enter. Gurgel wanted his gym fresh for the World Championships just a few days later but along with Leozinho Vieira, Fernando Augusto da Silva, Rodrigo Comprido and Rico Vieira, Maia chose to go where the money was.
Gurgel decided to punish the fighters by not allowing them to compete for team Alliance in the World Championships or return to their gym. The group stuck together competing under the Master Jiu Jitsu Team banner for a year or so then finally Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu was born. From their start in 2004 team Brasa did well until in 2008 they too started to crumble from the inside and divide into more teams (Atos, Checkmat).
Maia had many accomplishments among his martial arts career before the UFC. He was a multi time champ in team and worlds at CBJJ (2000, 20001 and 2003) and 2007 ADCC world champ in the 77-87 kg. class. He also took first place at the 2002 and 2005 CBJJO and second place at the 2005 ADCC World Championships.
Maia made his MMA debut in September 2001 at Tormenta en el Ring scoring a first round TKO after just 0:48 over Raul Sosa. He wouldn’t compete in MMA again for over four years when he returned at The Cage Vol. 4: Redemption with a first round armbar of Lukasz Chlewicki. A year later he would go on to win three bouts in one night capturing the 2007 Super Challenge Championship. Defeating all three opponents in a total time of 14 minutes and 5 seconds, 2 by submission with his championship bout taking only 35 seconds.
After a GFC appearance in May where he won via injury, Maia would debut in the UFC in October 2007 on a 6 fight winning streak. He would go on to have 5 straight submission victories before being KO’d by Nate Marquardt in just 21 seconds at UFC 102 in August 2009. Two fights later he would challenge what many considered the GOAT Anderson Silva for the middleweight belt at UFC 112 but fell short with a unanimous decision loss.
He wouldn’t have another submission win until his memorable blood squirting neck crank of Rick Story at UFC 153 in October 2012 after dropping down to welterweight. After a couple of decision losses to Jake Shields and Rory MacDonald he would work his way to a welterweight title shot against Tyron Woodley at UFC 214 where he would again lose by decision. Maia just lost to Colby Covington at UFC Fight Night 119 putting him on his second two fight losing streak of his career.
In his 33 fight career Maia has tapped out 12 of his opponents totaling 2,163.5 lbs. of men.
