Several news outlets are reporting that heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou are being targeted to fight each other at UFC 220. Ariel Helwani confirmed this news on Monday during his show, The MMA Hour.
Background on Miocic and Ngannou
Miocic is 11-2 in the UFC and won the heavyweight title at UFC 193 when he knocked out Fabricio Werdum. Since then he successfully defended the title against Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos.
Ngannou is a perfect 6-0 in the UFC. He knocked out Alistair Overeem this past Saturday at UFC 218 in one of the most devastating knockouts in MMA history. UFC President, Dana White said before the Ngannou’s fight with Overeem that the winner would get the next title shot. White confirmed the news after the fight that Ngannou would fight for the title next.
UFC 220 is scheduled for January 20th in Boston, Massachusetts. If Miocic and Ngannou match gets finalized it would be the 2nd title fight on the card. The UFC already announced that Daniel Cormier will defend his Light Heavyweight title against Volkan Oezdemir.
