Just hours after the LA Times was reporting that Stephen Thompson will fight Darren Till, Ariel Helwani is reporting that it isn’t a done deal.
The Times was reporting that UFC President Dana White said the two welterweights would face each other on February 24th. However, Thompson’s coach and father, Ray Thompson is denying the report. He stated that Thompson has injuries to both hands and wasn’t even approached about the fight yet.
“We’ve talk to no one [about fighting Till]”, Ray Thompson said, “Not sure how this is a done deal. As for Till, he needs to fight through murderers row at welterweight like Wonderboy did to get there”/
Ray Thompson would go on to say that Stephen Thompson wants a fight with Robbie Lawler and not Darren Till.
The LA Times has corrected their story from yesterday. Apparently White reported that the plan was originally to have Till fight February 24th in Orland, but the plan is now to have him fight in his hometown of Liverpool, England. The UFC has not changed the venue for the February 24th event, which is scheduled for Orlando.
