Q&A with Justin “The Fort” Sumter

By:  Nick Portella

What’s good fight fans? Today I had the chance to catch up with Justin “The Fort” Sumter. Justin won his most recent fight at CES 44 on May 12, 2017 via decision. Let’s take a seat with Justin and get to know him better.

Nick:  What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
Justin:  It means putting in the hard work to reap the benefits in the cage.

Nick:  At what age did you begin your training in  martial arts?
Justin:  I started wrestling when I was 16 years old in high school. I did not begin to train MMA until 2011.

Nick:  What belts do you hold and in what disciplines?
Justin:  I hold a purple belt in jiu jitsu.

Nick:  What would you say your best attribute is inside the cage?
Justin:  I would have to say my range.

Nick:  You have the nickname The Fort. Who gave you that name and why?
Justin:  My friends down South gave it to me because of Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

Nick:  Since you have made this journey what advice can you give to new fighters wanting to make this a career?
Justin:  Never let loses go to your heart and a win go to your head

Nick:  May 12 you faced a tough opponent in submission specialist Brian Sparrow. Did you add any extra training for grappling knowing the fighter you were facing?
Justin:  Nothing extra just kept training hard. Worked on some ankle locks for a few days but kept my training the same.

Nick:  At one point Brian caught you in an arm bar. You seemed very calm and worked your way out of it. What was going through your head when he locked it in initially?
Justin:  The only thing I could think was you are not going to tap me.

Nick:  You are now 4-1 as a professional on a 4 fight win streak. When can we expect to see you inside the cage again?
Justin:  Late summer or early fall.

Who is your favorite MMA fighter past or present?
Demetrius Johnson Anderson Silva

Nick:  Justin have you submitted to the takeover?
Justin:  This is Justin “The Fort” Sumter and I have submitted to the takeover.
