What’s good fight fans? Today I had the chance to sit down with pro-MMA fighter Vanesa Rico. Vanesa will be appearing on the Combate Clasico card July 27, 2017, in Miami, Florida. Let’s have a seat with Vanesa and talk about her career and her upcoming war in the cage.

Nick:  What does it mean (to you) to be a fighter?
Vanesa:  This has been my lifestyle since I was 8 years old. I have always been competing and challenging myself in new ways.

Nick:  At what age did you begin to train martial arts?
Vanesa:  I started Judo at 8 years old.

Nick:  What camp do you train out of and how long have you been with them?
Vanesa:  I train at Fisico Marcial with Monica Gaytan. I have been with my team since I started MMA 5 years ago.

Nick:  What inspired you to pursue a career in combat sports?
Vanesa:  I started at such a young age and kept pursuing the highest level of competition I could find. I had reached my peak in Judo and wanted to pursue a new challenge in MMA.

Nick:  What do you think your best attribute is as a fighter?
Vanesa:  My tenacity, my strength, and my dedication. All the qualities needed to be a champion.

Nick:  Most fighters get branded a nickname at some point in time. Do you have one?  If so what is it and who gave it to you?
Vanesa:  I do not have a formal nickname, but my teammates and friends call me Chikitina because I am so short.

Nick:  With Combate Clasico and the soccer games going on in Miami, this is sure to be a huge week. How great does it feel to be on such a high profile fight card?
Vanesa:  I am so thankful to Combate for this amazing opportunity to fight on such a high-level card. It feels amazing to represent my country and WMMA on the biggest show to date for Combate. It makes me want this win more than ever and I could not be more excited.

Nick:  You will be facing a tough opponent in Kyra Batara. This is a fight that should have happened in February but was canceled due to your opponent missing weight. With all the hype around this fight, how do you feel that you match up with Kyra?
Vanesa:  I feel amazing and have been training for the fight since last December. I feel more prepared than ever.  Kyra had better do her part this time and make weight like a professional. 2 of her 3 fights in La Jaula have not been at atom weight and she missed her last attempt. It’s hard to be the self-proclaimed best and “Princess” in a weight class when you have only fought twice in that weight class in 2 years.

Nick:  Do you have a prediction for your fight?
Vanesa:  I am going to win this fight because I will dominate with my striking and my ground game.  My training has never been better and I trust the preparation that my camp has provided.

Nick:  With all of your wins coming via submission and Kyra being well rounded with her ground game, are you comfortable with this fight going to the ground?
Vanesa:  I am comfortable with wherever the fight goes.

Nick:  Who is your favorite fighter of all time?
Vanesa:  Megumi “Mega Megu” Fuji.

Nick:  What one tip can you give to the up and coming generation of fighters?
Vanesa:  Train hard and keep following your dreams. Never stop believing in yourself, even at times when the odds are against you. That is when character is built.

Nick:  If you could have one dream fight with anyone in history who would it be and why?
Vanesa:  I would love to fight my idol Megumi Fuji. She is the best in the world and it would be an honor to share the cage with her.

Vanesa would like to thank all of the people that have been supporting her in Spain and across the world. Thank you to her team at Fisico Marcial for all of the time and energy they have spent in preparing her for this fight. Thank you to her coach Monica for everything she does for her inside and outside of the cage. Huge shout out to her sponsors. She would not be able to follow her dreams without them. Thank you to White Buffalo Fight Management for believing in her. She will make every last one of you proud on July 27. A big thank you to Combate and all of their staff for being so amazing. She is proud to call Combate her home.

Amazing words from an amazing fighter. Since this fight has been in the making for some time now I have no doubt that what you are going to see is nothing short of spectacular. I wish Vanesa all the best in her upcoming match and in whatever she does moving forward. Signing off for TheMMATakeOver.com this is Nick Portella.  @NickPortellaMMA
