Longtime MMA veteran Antonio “Minotouro” Nogueira is the latest fighter to fall under USADA’s radar.
Nogueira released a statement on Thursday, October 19th, revealing he has tested positive for a “diuretic substance”. He assured the situation will be scrutinized as he claims his innocence.
“Students, fans, friends, family: to all who are always by my side, I am here to share with you that today I was surprised by USADA (anti-doping control organization) that a diuretic substance appeared in my exams.
I am here to try to clarify because we do not yet have all the explanations, but from now on we will investigate this situation in depth. I have told all of you that I am confident in my defense and we will find out what happened.
I have never needed to take a diuretic and everyone who accompanies me mainly my coaches know that I never had any difficulties to lose weight and this is the function of the diuretic.
As soon as the UFC schedules my fight I will start a process of diet and training precisely so that at the end of my camp I won’t suffer from weight loss.
It is very difficult going through this for me as I have always been honest and especially with my work which I have dedicated myself and continue to dedicate myself as it’s my passion. Because of this, unfortunately, my fight was canceled and I was very sad about it all but I hope as soon as possible to clarify this misunderstanding and give you all a spectacular fight.
Thank you all for your support and respect for me”
Nogueira (22-8), who currently competes in the Light Heavyweight division of the UFC, was scheduled to fight Jared “The Killa Gorilla” Cannonier (10-2) at UFC on Fox 26: Lawler vs Dos Anjos, taking place on December 16 in Winnipeg, Canada.
Nogueira and his team informed MMA Fightings’ Guilherme Cruz that the substance which he tested positive for was Hydrochlorothiazide. Former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has also tested positive for the same substance in the summer of 2017, forcing him out of his bout with Francis Ngannou.
At 41 years old, a potential long-term suspension could have a devastating impact on the rest of Nogueiras’ career.
UFC on Fox 26 will feature Robbie Lawler (28-11) vs Rafael Dos Anjos (27-9) (Welterweight) for a possible number contender spot as well as Jose Aldo (26-3) vs Ricardo Lamas (18-5) (Featherweight), Mike Perry (11-1) vs Santiago Ponzinibbio (25-3) (Welterweight) and Glover Teixeira (26-6) vs Misha Circunov (13-3) (Light Heavyweight) and will be free to watch on Fight Pass.
