Nicco Montano Pulls Off 3rd Straight Upset, Will Fight For UFC Title at TUF 26 Finale

The newest episode of the 26th season of the Ultimate Fighter show aired Wednesday Night. The show was highlight by the first semi-finals matchup.  The first matchup was between Barb Honchak and Nicco Montano.  Montano won the fight by unanimous decision.

Honchak entered the competition as the former Invicta FC champion. Honchak was stripped of the title due to inactivity. She came into the competition as the #2 seed even though she already held a victory over #1 seed Roxanne Modafferi.  She is on a 9 fight winning streak. Honchak defeated Gillian Robertson and Rachael Ostovich to reach the semi-finals.

Montano is a Navajo Indian. She entered the competition as the 14th seed due to a 3-2 professional record. She came off a loss when entering the house. Montano pulled off upset decision wins over Lauren Murphy and Montana Stewart to reach the house.

In the first round of their match, Montano found some very nice success in the clinch. She landed some very heavy knees on Honchak’s body. Montano secured the round by landing a lateral drop on Honchak and pounding away from on top with elbows on Honchak.

Montano worked to get in the clinch in the 2nd round and began to work Honchak’s body with more knees. Honchak worked her way back into the fight when she started to land some strikes on the feet. Honchak landed several right hands on Montano. Montano was able to get to the clinch and land some knees in the clinch and but was tripped down to the mat as the round ended.

Honchak opened the third round by landed two heavy overhand right hands. Honchak caught a high kick fro Montano but when she went to take her down, Montano was able to wrap her other leg around Honchak and take her back. Montano worked for the rear naked choke until Honchak got back to the feet. Both women would spend the remainder of the fight in the clinch, in which Montano seemed to landed the best strikes. The separated for a brief moment where Montano took Honchak down with a double leg takedown as the fight ended.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Montano giving the win and sending her to the finals.

Montano will face the winner of Modafferi vs Sijara Eubanks at the Ultimate Fighter Season 26 finale on December 1st in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The winner of the finals will be crowned the inaugural UFC women’s flyweight champion.
