“The Money Fight” which featured boxing great Floyd Mayweather (50-0 in boxing) and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor (21-3 in MMA, 0-1 in boxing) is now officially the 2nd best selling pay-per-view of all time.
Showtime Sports has announced that the super fight generated 4.3 million buys in North America. This puts it at 300,000 fewer buys than the number one selling pay-per-view of all time Mayweather vs. Pacquiao which did 4.6 million in 2015.
The announcement from Showtime also stated that the bout generated over $600 million dollars in global revenue via ticket sales, international distribution, and sponsorships.
While many panned the bout as being more of a spectacle than a legitimate fight, it became obvious from the opening bell that McGregor had taken the whole thing seriously and he began putting in work on Mayweather.
The match would see McGregor have early success and Mayweather lay back a bit in the opening rounds. But as the fight went on, Mayweather’s pace picked up as McGregor’s dwindled. The fight would be an exciting affair that would see Mayweather picked up a TKO victory in the 10th round.
