Maverick MMA 3 Results And Recap

Sherman Theatre

What’s good fight fans? On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Maverick MMA will be invading The Sherman Theatre once again. Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania will be hosting the third installment of Maverick MMA. Maverick MMA 1 was a hit, Maverick MMA 2 lived up to the hype, and Maverick MMA 3 promises to top them all.

The main event of the 12 fight card will be headlined by a featherweight title rematch which promises to deliver. Current champion Scott “The Animal” Heckman will step back into the cage to face “Wreck-It” Robert Sullivan. The two met earlier in the year and Heckman came out on top winning via split decision in a fight that has to be a top two regional fight for the year. The fans requested it so these two warriors are going to deliver once again. If that wasn’t enough there will be a pro middleweight champion and an amateur strawweight champion crowned. Three title fights in one night.

Heckman Remains On Top
With a rocky start to this fight, Robert Sullivan came out firing on all cylinders. He was very effective with his striking in every round. He was also very good at stuffing many takedown attempts by Heckman. Near the end of the second round and the third round, Heckman began to chop down on Sullivans lead leg scoring points.

Scott Heckman retains his featherweight title via split decision.

THEMMATAKEOVER Scorecard – 29-28 Sullivan
Judges Scorecard – 29-28 x2 in favor of Heckman
– 29-28 in favor of Sullivan

Angelo Pulls Out The Win
While this fight started off evenly matched as the rounds progressed Angelo was able to implement his plan better to take home the title. Gratalo is as tough as they come and moved forward throughout the fight. This could be the next title rematch on the horizon.

Joey Angelo becomes the first Maverick MMA middleweight champion

THEMMATAKEOVER Scorecard – 29-28 Angelo
Judges Scorecard – 29-28 x3 Angelo

The Damsel Was Not In Distress
There isn’t much to say about this one. VanZandt came out attacking and continued at a high pace until she got the finish. Kudos to Rachel Sazoff for her performance as well.

Lindsey VanZandt moves to 2-0 in her professional career

THEMMATAKEOVER Scorecard – 10-9 VanZandt after round 1

Feud Ends With A Bang
Since this fight was made the two have gone back and forth on social media regarding their match-up. Today it came to a head. Vento came out strong in the first round landing some vicious blows to the head of Espinosa. Espinosa was able to keep his composure and score some big shots of his own and a few takedowns. Espinosa came out of the gate for round 2 ready to go and in sync. The match ended with Espinosa landing a vicious knee to the rib area of Vento stopping the fight via TKO.

Tommy Espinosa moves to a three-fight win streak all via TKO

THEMMATAKEOVER Scorecard – 10-9 Espinosa after one round

Foster Scores A Vicious Win
This fight started off fast and heavy. The two clearly were ready to go at each other. Round 1 was all Foster doing most of the damage and also landing an accidental low blow. Nuno did start to come on strong in the closing seconds of round 1 but not enough to win the round. There was definitely a good amount of trash talk after the bell. The start of round 2 looked just like round only Nuno was in the driver’s seat. Foster did manage to get back in the game at the end of the round but not enough to steal the round. Again more jawing took place between the two going back to their corners. The third round was even but Foster implemented his ground game and was able to secure the submission win.

Travis Foster wins his second in a row starting a win streak

THEMMATAKEOVER Scorecard – 19-19 after two rounds

There are days where I sound like I am beating a dead horse and this is one of those days. Maverick MMA is quickly moving up the ranks of the regional scene. This was definitely a show that should have been seen live and the amateur card alone was worth the price of admission. Once again I thoroughly enjoyed the entire card and the evening. Keep your eyes open for Maverick MMA 4. Signing off for TheMMATakeOver.com this is Nick Portella. @NickPortellaMMA
