UFC 219 Recap: Khabib dominant in win

In the co-main event of the evening, powerhouse wrestler and the UFC’s number two lightweight contender, Khabib Nurmagomedov, took on explosive knockout artist and the UFC’s number four ranked contender, Edson Barboza. Nurmagomedov came in after a year off, but most recently having run through the always tough striker Michael Johnson at UFC 205 in November of last year. Barboza(the owner of the famous Terry Etim wheel kick knockout) comes in on a three fight win streak, fresh off of a highlight reel knockout of Beniel Dariush.

Round one- The fight starts off with some solid kicks to the legs and body for Barboza. Khabib gets him down about 90 seconds in, and does what he does.  Full control for the Eagle, landing huge punches from the guard. Khabib takes mount, and it only gets worse for Barboza. This is becoming a mauling. After having his back briefly taken, Barboza is able to get to half guard, but that’s about all he did in the round. TheMMATakeover scored it 10-8 for Nurmagomedov.

Round two- Barboza comes out looking to be in rough shape, after a brief exchange, that Nurmagomedov pressure is back. Khabib literally jogging after Barboza, refusing to give him any space.Khabib forces a takedown and gets mount. He proceeds to finish the round with more control and violent ground and pound. TheMMATakeover scored it 10-8 for Nurmagomedov.

Round three- Barboza comes out with a flying knee to start the round, doesn’t land it but he’s still going for it. More insane pressure from Nurmagomedov ends with a takedown. Barboza manages to get up, but can’t get away. Khabib continues to control him against the cage. WHEEL KICK… but it just doesn’t matter, Khabib walks right through it. After a little more clinch control for Khabib, Barboza gets away and attempts a few strikes to no avail. TheMMATakeover scored it 10-9 for Nurmagomedov.

Result: Khabib Nurmagomedov Defeats Edson Barboza via Unanimous Decision
