With UFC 209 slotted for March 4th, lightweight title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov is expected to fight the #2 ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson possible for the interim belt. The winner of this bout would likely face current champion – Conor McGregor later this year.
Nurmagomedov is a Sambo master and is coming off of a devastating victory over Michael Johnson at UFC 205. Khabib is undefeated and on a 24 fight win streak. He would pose a real threat to the “Notorious” Conor McGregor. The 28 year old Russian feels he’s earned his title shot and will do whatever it takes to become the LW Champ.
On the other hand, Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson is on a 9 fight win streak and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over former LW Champ Rafael Dos Anjos. Ferguson, who is TUF season 13 winner is a rear naked choke artist and poses an exciting match up against Nurmagomedov.
One thing is for sure, Conor McGregor will be following this match up closely.
- Though Nurmagomedov’s father stated that the fight was official, Nurmagomedov tweeted out that the negotiation is still on-going.
