Jessica “Bate Estaca” Andrade 17-6 MMA (8-4 UFC) calls for title scrap with newly crowned strawweight champ “Thug” Rose Namajunas 7-3 MMA (5-2 UFC).
Namajunas upset long time champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk 14-1 MMA (8-1 UFC) at UFC 217 this past Saturday in one of her best performances. Jedrzejczyk won the belt from Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza 12-4 MMA (3-2 UFC) at UFC 185 back in March 2015. After defending the belt 5 times Namajunas was able to stop her in the first round by TKO at 3:03, which is incidentally the name of the GYM she trains at, 303 Training Center.
During an interview with Combate, Andrade explains what she thought of the fight and what her plans are moving forward:
“Now the division will see some variety. Namajunas looked really good, knocked her out. She’s a really tough opponent. Since I’m number one in the rankings, I can ask for this fight, and I will. I will train a lot, I’ll dedicate myself and I’ll be completely different from Joanna. I won’t underestimate her. Rose has a warrior’s spirit and won the belt. I didn’t think it was going to happen, but every fight’s different.”
“Joanna lost just like any other athlete can lose on any given day. Maybe she wasn’t having a good day, maybe she didn’t train enough, but I believe the truth is that she really underestimated her opponent. She tried to get inside Rose’s head with mind games, but it didn’t work, right? I won’t underestimate her because I see great potential in Rose. I can’t wait for this fight. Let’s create some buzz on social media and make it happen.”
Does Jedrzejczyk deserve an immediate rematch? How do you think the new champ would do facing Andrade? Do you think she would try to keep it standing? Or do you think she would go for the submission?
