UFC Charlotte Recap: Jacare Stops Brunson In The 1st

In the main event of the evening, perennial contenders Derek Brunson and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza clashed in a rematch of their 2012 match-up in Strikeforce, a fight Jacare won via knockout in just 41 seconds. Souza(24-5, 1 NC) came in off of a TKO loss to current UFC Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, but preceded that fight with first-round finishes of both Vitor Belfort and Tim Boetsch. Brunson(18-5) rolled into the match-up riding a wave of momentum, coming off consecutive first-round knockouts of Dan Kelly and UFC legend Lyoto Machida.

Round 1: They both come out looking a little tentative. Brunson attacks first with a couple of leg kicks. They circle and no one really does much for about 90 seconds. Brunson starts to get aggressive, exploding forward with combinations but a Jacare counter right hands slows his roll a bit. After a little more circling Jacare lands a nice right hand. Jacare shoots but Brunson hits a picture perfect Whizzer and stuffs it. HEAD KICK! Jacare hurts Brunson badly. Jacare stalks a wobbling Brunson to the cage and lands a couple of clean punches. Brunson goes down face first and that is all she wrote! Jacare got him again.

Result: Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza defeats Derek Brunson via knockout at 3:50 of round 1
