UFC middleweight champ Georges “Rush” St. Pierre 26-2 MMA (21-2 UFC) has vacated his Middleweight Title. Interim champ Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker 19-4 MMA (10-2 UFC) will now defend against Luke Rockhold 16-3 MMA (6-2 UFC) for the undisputed middleweight championship.
St. Pierre’s statement:
“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health. Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.”
Whittaker is coming off his unanimous decision win vs Yoel “Soldier Of God” Romero 12-2 MMA (8-1 UFC) at UFC 213 for the interim title. He is now on an 8-fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2014 to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson 14-2-1 MMA (9-2-1 UFC) at UFC 170.
Rockhold is coming off his second round TKO to punches over David Branch at UFC Fight Night 116.
