In the second match-up of the main card, promising lightweight prospect Gregor “the gift” Gillespie took on Jordan “all day” Rinaldi. Gillespie held a record of 10-0 and was 3-0 in the UFC coming into the fight, while Rinaldi was 13-5 overall with a 1-1 mark in the UFC. Rinaldi was coming off of an impressive Von Flue choke of Alvaro Herrera. Gillespie came in fresh off of a submission of his own, an arm-triangle choke of Jason Gonzalez.
Round 1: They come out circling, Rinaldi misses on a 1-2 combination. He follows up with a couple of head kicks but doesn’t land. Gillespie is extremely aggressive, swinging big punches but not landing much. Gregor shoots and eventually secures a single leg. Rinaldi gets half guard as Gillespie looks for a guillotine from the top. He passes to side control followed by a mount. Gregor looks for an arm triangle but can’t secure it. Rinaldi gives up his back and then back to being mounted. He has no answer for Gillespie’s top control. After alternating mount and back mount a couple more times, Gregor eventually flattens Rinaldi out. He postures up and starts raining huge shots down. This is becoming a mauling. The ref finally steps in and stops it, saving Rinaldi from absorbing any more punishment.
