MMA Today is reporting that Daniel Cormier vs Volkan Oezdemir is in the works for UFC 220. This news comes days after Cormier informed Fansided MMA that a fight between him and Oezdemir would be “announced soon” but did not name a date or place for the event.
Cormier’s teammate at American Kickboxing Academy, Islam Makhachev let the cat out of the bag on the Cormier vs Oezdemir fight early this week. It was announced earlier this week that Makhachev would be fighting Gleison Tibua at UFC 220. Makhachev confirmed this when he told Eagles MMA that, “They did not give me a fight on December 30th but gave it on January 20th. I note that my teammate Daniel Cormier, which whom we are training at AKA will be on my card. We will be able to prepare together”.
Cormier heads into the fight after losing his UFC Light Heavyweight title to bitter rival Jon Jones at UFC 214. However, the fight was changed to a No-Contest and Cormier was awarded the title back, when Jones was stripped of the belt due to failing a USADA anti-doping test.
Oezdemir is a fighter out of Switzerland that has taken the MMA world by storm. The virtually unknown Swiss fighter took a short notice fight against Ovince St. Preux at a UFC Fight Night in February. He pulled off the massive upset by beating St. Preux by decision. He followed up that win by pulling off two more upsets. He knocked out Misha Cirkunov at a UFC Fight Night in May. Oezdemir would then knock out Jimi Manuwa at UFC 214.
The UFC, Cormier, and Oezdemir have not yet commentated about the rumored fight at UFC 220. However, with Cormier commentating tonight’s UFC 217, perhaps an announcement will be made.
UFC 220 is scheduled for January 20th in Boston, Massachusetts. The two fight for Cormier’s UFC Light Heavyweight title. A win for Oezdemir would crown the first Swiss champion in UFC history.
