Recap of Dana White’s Interview with Video
He Talks McGregor, Showtime, Cyborg vs Nunes, and so much more
On Thursday, Yahoo’s Kevin Iole got the opportunity to go a video interview with UFC President, Dana White while White was on vacation in Thailand. The two talked about a series of topics including Conor McGregor defending his lightweight belt, a super fight between champions, Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Amanda Nunes, and promoting boxing. Here is a recap of some of the high points of the interview
White on Conor McGregor Defending the Lightweight Title
Conor and I haven’t really figured out when he is coming back and what’s going on. Conor has some big decisions to make here and really quick. I don’t think he wants to fight until August but if he waits until August or September it will be two years since the belt has been defended and that can’t happen… We can’t let this go on forever. We got to give other guys an oppurtunity. Tony Ferguson has been around for a long time and has earned his dues. Khabib [Nurmagomedov] has earned his dues.
If he decided he doesn’t want to fight again for however long, that’s up to him and his decision. But the belt has to go on.
As long as Conor is willing to fight by March, we could do Khabib vs Tony. And the winner fights Conor for the title . Or Conor doesn’t want to fight until next fall. If so, then we will have Khabib vs Tony for the title, not the interim title.
White on Conor McGregor Having a Run-In with the Irish Mob
The stories of him crossing paths with gangsters are totally not true. Conor told me that it is all bullshit!
White on Cris “Cyborg” Justino’s Next Fight
First of all, Amanda Nunes wants to fight her. That is the fight to make and that is the fight I will make. That’s the fight to make. Amanda Nunes is a big powerful striker. I think she matches up great against Cyborg and I think that is a fun fight to make.
Cyborg wants a fight. As soon as Nunes is ready to fight, we will get it done.
White on Promoting Boxing:
When we did the Mayweather fight, I took it all in. The guys that are promoting boxing today are bad at it. They aren’t good . I think I could do it better.
I don’t give a shit about Showtime’s press release. It’s the biggest fight ever! It did 6.7 million Pay Per View buys. If the service didn’t drop, we would have been closer to 7 million. The way they handled that press release. I didn’t trust those guys before, now I despise those fucking guys. I will work with those guys again. I think we could do it a lot better. I think we could add something to the sport. I think we could raise the level of boxing. I am interested in doing it.
I have ideas to fix these things… I am gonna give it a shot.
