Dominick Cruz vs Jimmie Rivera and Cynthia Calvillo vs Carla Esparza added to UFC 219
Today, UFC officially announced two fights being added to December’s UFC 219 event. The two fights will be former bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz taking on Jimmie Rivera and former women’s strawweight champion, Carla Esparza taking on Cynthia Calvillo.
This will be Cruz’s first fight since losing his championship to Cody Grabrandt back in December of 2016. Before his title defense loss, Cruz had been on a 13 win fight streak, including wins over T.J. Dillashaw, Demetrious Johnson, and Urijah Faber. Cruz will be looking for a big win against Rivera to get a possible title rematch against Garbrandt.
Rivera will be putting a 20 win fight streak on the line when he steps in the octagon against Cruz. Some of Rivera’s wins during his streak have come against Thomas Almeida, Urijah Faber, and Iuri Alcantara. This will be a great top 5 matchup (via theMMAtakeover rankings) with a lot on the line.
Undefeated strawweight fighter Calvillo will be looking for a huge win when she takes on theMMAtakeover’s #7 strawweight Carla Esparza. Coming off a decision win against Joanne Calderwood in July, Calvillo will be looking to add an impressive win as she looks to climb the ladder in the women’s strawweight rankings.
Esparza goes into this fight with a 2-2 record over her last 4 fights. She is coming off a decision win over Maryna Moroz back in June of this year. She will be looking to give Calvillo her first career loss inside the octagon and move back up the ranks and get closer to a potential title fight.
UFC 219 is scheduled to take place on December 30th. As of now, the card only has these two fights and one other fight currently scheduled. The other fight currently scheduled is Matheus Pereira vs Louis Smolka. We will bring you updates on the card as they are announced.
