According to MMA Fighting.com, UFC 222 has now got its main event and co-main event. Cris Cyborg and Yana Kunitskaya will now fight for the women’s featherweight title. This will be the main event while Brian Ortega will replace the injured featherweight champion Max Holloway against Frankie Edgar in the co-main event. This will be a non-title fight according to MMA Fighting sources.
Current featherweight champion Max Holloway was supposed to defend his belt against fan favorite and former UFC lightweight champion Franke Edgar. However, Holloway sustained an was injury and was ruled out. This created a lot of speculations about who would headline UFC 222. Fortunately, with less than a month left, the promotion has now created a solution to the problem.
Cyborg will enter the octagon after a successful title defense this past December against former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm. The fight was the won via unanimous decision.
Kunitskaya, on the other hand, will be making her UFC debut. She comes from a win against Raquel Pa’aluhi this past August where she won the vacant Invicta bantamweight women’s belt.
Frankie Edgar who has last fought in May 2017 was scheduled to face Holloway on December 2, 2017, at UFC 218. However, Edgar sustained an injury which postponed the fight to UFC 222. He will now face the unbeaten prospect and submission expert Brian Ortega in presumably a title eliminator fight with the winner likely earning a shot at Holloway’s belt when he’s fit to return.
UFC 222 will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 3.
