UFC’s on Fox the first fight card in Long Island did not disappoint with plenty of action, upsets, and guys making a name for themselves.
Chris Weidman is back! The first round saw typical Weidman using his reach and wrestling to control Kelvin Gastelum until the end when Gastelum landed a nice shot that dropped Weidman and if it wasn’t for the bell who knows what would have happened. In the second round, Weidman showed he was recovered and came out controlling Gastelum with take down after take-down and some nice ground and pound. In the third round, Weidman looked very comfortable landing some nice combos and once again got the take-down and from there controlled Gastelum till he was able to sink in an arm triangle and get the tap.
-Chris Weidman def. Kelvin Gastelum via submission (arm triangle) round 3, 3:45
Dennis Bermudez and Darren Elkins both came to fight in a very close back and forth fight. The fight was all over the place with take downs, clinch work, flying attacks. After 3 close rounds, the judges awarded Elkins with a split decision, he landed a few more take-downs which I believe is what secured the win.
-Darren Elkins def. Dennis Bermudez via split decision
A very close bloody fight was what happened when Gian Villante and Patrick Cummins stepped into the cage together. The whole fight was back and forth with each guy having their moments. Villante landed some nice combos tagging Cummins and Cummins used his grappling advantage controlling Villante against the cage and landing some shots of his own. Ultimately it came down to Cummins controlling the cage, which is what got him the nod.
-Patrick Cummins def. Gain Villante via split decision
What a fight! Jimmie Rivera dropped Thomas Almeida twice in the first round but Almeida survived and then in the second round Rivera started out hot again rocking Almeida early. Almeida survived again and ended up dropping Rivera in the middle of the second. In the third round Rivera was able to secure two take-downs which was what secured the fight for him in a very entertaining fight. Now on a 20-fight win streak Jimmie Rivera should be in talks as a number 1 contender in the bantam weight division.
