UFC 219 Recap: Esparza gets unanimous decision victory over Calvillo

Up and coming Team Alpha Male product Cynthia Calvillo took on Former UFC Strawweight champion Carla Esparza in the second showcase on tonight’s Pay Per View. Calvillo came in undefeated, holding a 3-0 record in the UFC and a 6-0 record overall. Her record includes submission victories over both Amanda Cooper and Pearl Gonzalez, as well as a TKO victory over Montana De La Rosa. Former champ Carla Esparza, in addition to her victory over current UFC Strawweight champion Rose Namajunas, holds notable victories over Juliana Lima, Bec Rawlings and Felice Herrig. She came in off of a decision victory over Maryna Moroz.

The fight:

Round one- The first round kicked off with a solid right for Calvillo followed by a good back and forth exchange. A lot of movement is followed by a Calvillo takedown. Esparza is able to retain guard but eats an elbow for her trouble. Esparza gets very close on an armbar attempt off of her back, but loses her grip. Calvillo takes advantage and winds up in side control. Huge shots landed for Calvillo and she goes for a choke, but Esparza scrambles and get top position. The round ends with Esparza landing some big shots on top. TheMMATakeover scores it 10-9 for Calvillo.

Round two- The second round begins with a big right hand and a couple of leg kicks for Esparza, she’s getting aggressive. She’s walking Calvillo down and landing shots, but Cynthia responds with a Good knee to the body. Calvillo becomes the aggressor, pressing the action and landing shots. After a very short-lived takedown for Carla, the action slows for a bit. Carla gets another takedown late, and rides out the round. Calvillo pushes her away just after the bell, Nick Diaz style. Round three- After a couple of good exchanges in which both women landed shots, Calvillo pushes Esparza against the cage. They split up, and there a lot of whiffed punches in the following exchanges. Carla stops a takedown and proceeds to land some good shots. They get very intense and end the fight on a high not, with an absolutely CRAZY exchange. TheMMATakeover scored it 10-9 for Esparza.
