Bellator NYC Recap: 2 Pride FC Legends Go Down
Bellator had their biggest night in the company’s existence when they had two events on the same night. They packed Madison Square Garden and all the stars came out. They called their first event Bellator 180 which was headlined by the title fight between Phil Davis and Ryan Bader. The second event which was live on Pay Per View was called Bellator NYC, which was headlined by the grudge match between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.
Sonnen stated that he was going to have Silva on his back constantly for the fight and he wasn’t wrong. Sonnen dominated the fight with takedowns, and controlled the Brazilian fighter with top control. Silva’s best moment was at the end of the first round when he dropped Sonnen with a punch. However Sonnen recovered and controlled the fight with takedowns. Chael Sonnen beats Wanderlei Silva by unanimous decision.
During the post fight interview, Sonnen called for a fight with former Pride FC champion, Fedor Emelianenko.
Emelianenko was in the co-main event of the evening against Matt Mitrione. The fight didn’t last long. The two heavyweights both dropped each other at the same time. Mitrione was able to get to the feet before Emelianenko did. He landed another right hand that rocked the legend and finished him off with a huge right hand to the downed Emelianenko. Matt Mitrione beats Fedor Emelianenko by 1st round TKO.
The third title fight of the evening was between Michael Chandler and Brent Primus. The fight came to a quick ending when Chandler suffered a left ankle injury. Primus threw a kick at Chandler’s lead left leg. Chandler dodged the kick but rolled his ankle as he moved away. He attempted to fight threw the pain but constantly lost his balance when his ankle continued to give out on him. The referee called a stop to the fight by the advice of the ringside doctor. Brent Primus beats Michael Chandler by 1st round doctor stoppage. Primus wins the Bellator lightweight title.
Aaron Pico entered his MMA debut with as much hype as anybody in history. Many people was calling Pico the next big thing in MMA but somebody forgot to tell his opponent Zach Freeman. The fight only lasted 24 seconds. Both fighters we’re rocked by right hands but it was Freeman who was able to lock in a guillotine choke forcing Pick to tap out. Zach Freeman beats Aaron Pico by 1st round submission (Guillotine Choke)
Douglas Lima defended his welterweight title against the newly acquired Lorenz Larkin. The two fought back in forth threw five rounds but it was the champion Lima that landed the heavier shots. Lima dropped Larkin with a big shot in the second round but was unable to put him away. Douglas Lima beats Lorenz Larkin by unanimous decision.
Neiman Gracie and Dave Marfone was the swing bout of the night and happened between the co-main and main event of Bellator NYC. Gracie dominated Marfone with takedowns and was able to submit Marfone in the second round. Neiman Gracie beats Dave Marfone by 2nd round submission (Rear Naked Choke).
