With all the MMA action over the weekend, Bellator’s main event between lightweight champion, Michael Chandler vs former UFC and WEC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson might have been the best on paper, and it didn’t disappoint. Chandler was bloodied up, but he was able to hold on to a split decision win.
Chandler came out very aggressive in the first round, being able to put pressure on Henderson, landing good shots and takedowns. The highlight of the round and probable the match was when Chandler was behind Henderson and hit a text book suplex.
Henderson was able to regroup in the second round, by landing several kicks to the body, in a very close round.
The third and fourth round was controlled by Chandler again, where he kept Henderson backed up next to the cage, where he landed a volley of strikes and takedowns. During a scramble, Chandler was able to place Henderson in a deep guillotine, though Henderson found a way to get out.
In the final round, Henderson came out very aggressive, where he hurt Chandler with several punches. While Chandler was attempting to land a takedown on Chandler, Henderson landed several downward elbows that bloodied up the Champ. The round expired leaving Chandler looking the worse for the wear, but still holding on to a split decision.
In the co-main event, Michael Page put on a very lackluster performance against Fernando Gonzalez, winning by split decision. The fight consisted most of Page backing up, and occasionally landing a strike, while Gonzalez moved forward and landed even less strikes. The California crowd let both fighters know about their disappointment.
One of the highlights of the night was when the organization has a major announcement. The announcement brought out heavyweight Matt Mitrione, and revealed that he would fight former Pride heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko in San Jose in February. Emelianenko came out from backstage, which was supposedly a surprise to Mitrione. They stated that Mitrione signed a blank contract without knowing who he was going to face.
Another legend was seen in attendance, as former UFC welterweight champion, Georges St, Pierre was at the arena, and was confirmed to have met with Bellator president Scott Coker. St. Pierre recently announced the he was a free agent, after stating his frustrations with the UFC.
