It was officially announced today that UFC 224’s pay-per-view will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two first fights were also announced and include two Brazilian-born fighters. Lightweight German-born Nick Hein (14-2-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) will take on Davi Ramos (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC). While undefeated Alberto Mina (13-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will take on Dagestan’s own Ramazan Emeev (16-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a welterweight bout.
Mina, an accomplished grappler outside the octagon, will look to keep his unbeaten run in the sport. His career in the UFC has been successful but not sufficiently active for such a talented fighter. He holds three victories in the UFC where two of those were against what are considered two legends of the sport; one against Yoshiro Akiyama via split decision and the other a devastating KO victory over Mike Pyle at UFC Fight Night 90 in July 2016. However, he hasn’t fought since then.
Emeev will be making his Welterweight UFC debut. He was last year’s M-1 Global middleweight champion. He holds a notable win against multiple times sambo world champion and current inaugural M-1 Global light heavyweight champion Vyacheslav Vasilevsky.
UFC 224 So Far:
Lightweight Bout – Nick Hein vs. Davi Ramos
Welterweight Bout – Alberto Mina vs. Ramazan Emeev
Speculations have emerged that the promotion is also working on a women’s superfight between featherweight champion Cris Cyborg and Bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes. According to combate.com, this is likely to happen in Rio de Janeiro for UFC 224 instead of UFC 226.
UFC 224 is set for May 12 at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card will be available on pay-per-view while the prelims will be live on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. Out of nine events, UFC 224 will be the eighth pay-per-view that takes place Rio de Janeiro. UFC Fight Night 62 in March 2015 was the only ever Fight Night event.
